The National HCP Coalition will open the scholarship opportunity for the 2026 Annual Meeting in summer 2026.

The John Hopkins National HCP Coalition Annual Meeting Scholarship

The National Habitat Conservation Plan Coalition (NHCPC) proudly offers the John Hopkins National HCP Coalition Annual Meeting Scholarship. This scholarship provides financial support to individuals wishing to attend the NHCPC Annual Meeting. By participating, recipients will enhance their understanding of Habitat Conservation Plans (HCPs) through exposure to a variety of information related to the development, implementation, and renewal of these plans. This scholarship has been established in memory of John Hopkins, the founder of the National Habitat Conservation Plan Coalition.

This scholarship aims to broaden access to HCP information and develop a nationwide network of Coalition members. This network is dedicated to championing the power and implementation of HCPs as transformative local solutions that drive economic development while preserving and recovering threatened and endangered species and their habitats.

This scholarship has been established in memory of John Hopkins, the founder of the National Habitat Conservation Plan Coalition.

John fell in love with America’s wild places, and his passion for nature led him to a career in conservation. He founded the Institute for Ecological Health (IEH), which significantly influenced conservation efforts through his visionary approach and unwavering dedication to addressing conservation issues on a landscape scale. Taking on challenges such as grazing, overdevelopment of sensitive habitats, and other environmental issues.

He organized both the California and National Habitat Conservation Plan Coalitions to enhance planners’ abilities to protect endangered species while permitting urban development. John’s philosophy of collaboration and patience was key to developing effective Habitat Conservation Plans, solidifying his influence on landscape-scale conservation. Known for his vision, humor, and commitment, John left a lasting legacy in the field of conservation, inspiring many with his dedication to preserving nature.

In his spirit, the NHCPC annually provides a scholarship for individuals to attend the annual meeting and contribute to the growth of the Coalition.
